About this session

Burnout has become one of the defining challenges facing nonprofit organizations. Mission-driven professionals are deeply committed to their work, yet many are operating under unsustainable expectations, limited resources, and constant pressure to do more with less. This session explores burnout not as an individual resilience issue but as an organizational design challenge.

Participants will examine the structural drivers of nonprofit burnout, including role overload, unclear decision authority, unrealistic fundraising expectations, and the emotional weight of mission-driven work. Drawing from nonprofit leadership experience and sector research, the session will explore how leaders can redesign roles, clarify responsibilities, and create healthier organizational cultures that sustain both people and mission. Through practical exercises and discussion, participants will learn strategies to identify burnout risks within their organizations and implement structural changes that support long-term sustainability. Attendees will leave with tools to strengthen team resilience, retain talented staff, and build nonprofit workplaces where people can thrive while advancing the mission.
